One of the American Alligators with a GPS tracker from the University of Georgia’s Coastal Ecology Lab research project in the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge, Georgia. This individual is a female that has been a long-time resident of the boat bay in the Stephen C Foster State Park on the western side of the Swamp. Her left eye was damaged by a fishhook.

Alligators seem to be able to live with just about any type of injury. We have an old local male with three legs. He’s fairly large, must be 50+ years old. Gets along fine. Out in Donnelley we ID each old timer by the scars and missing pieces 😆.

My husband and I visited and stayed in a cabin at Stephen C Foster State Park in 2021. I have several photos of a gator that stayed near the boat and canoe ramp. This gator still had an actual fish hook in its eye. The ranger said it was better to leave it than to disturb or harm the gator trying to remove it.
